The most fragile component of an iPad is the glass screen. Usually the result of dropping the device, an unexpected impact can leave the glass cracked or shattered and the touch screen completely inoperative. There are three elements involved in an iPad screen replacement including the glass, the digitizer and the LCD display. Although the unit itself is warranted for a year, screen breakage is considered abuse and is not covered. Apple can repair the device by sending it directly back to the factory. To replace the glass screen and digitizer, Apple charges upwards of $200 or more for these repairs. If the LCD display requires replacement, they charge an additional cost. Apple has recently added iPad screen replacement services to their retail stores. These repairs can be completed while the customer waits, usually within 30 minutes. Third party vendors such as iFixIt, iResQ and Milliamp all offer iPad screen replacement services for substantially less than Apple charges. Unfortunately, repairs initiated by anyone other than an Apple authorized repair facility can void the iPad warranty. Although do-it-yourself iPad screen replacement kits are available, they are only recommended for those with the proper tools and expertise. Accidental damage to the logic board will render the device useless.
